Whooosh!

While shopping for some means of transportation we had the opportunity to test-drive an (older but well maintained) Audi A6 Avant.
Autobahn for all!

These days you will find that the maximum speed limit in Germany is often reduced to 130 km/h (80 mph) which is already 20 km/h (12 mph) more than Canadian general highway speed limit. But...
... you might have heard that there are stretches on the German Autobahn where you can legally drive as fast as you like or dare to push it. So Roland pushed it (a bit).

We watched out for these signs which cancel the speed limit or end all restrictions (including speed limit):
(Not even close to) flooring it!
180 km/h (112 mph)
It's good to be back on German roads. Finally fun on four wheels is no longer impossible... and it is totally legal.

  1. Audis are so nice. My favorite German lady back in Door County has a 2002 TT in silver. Perfect condition, too!

I hope this Avant works out for you!

    1. Thanks Martha, we are kinda hooked on this brand. It is just a matter of what fits into the budget... but this one made it high on our list.

  2. Sonja:

I am wondering how you are driving since it would take 6 weeks for "that" letter to go to that "other" department, and you had to surrender your BC Driver's license.

at least you aren't going to be homeless. You can sleep in the back

    1. Bob, we haven't surrendered the BC license just yet, they will be swapped once the German one is available, until then we can (must) use the Canadian license.

  3. Don't make the Canadian guys jealous with this speed fun on german roads ;-). Something we really miss here. Yesterday we enjoyed the story with the drivers licence exchange: german bureaucracy at its best - even the guy is a role model for the employees there.

    1. He he, that's exactly the intent ;-)

We already fear the next encounter with this guy...

  5. See, I knew you guys were fast!

Your making me jealous .. first that you can legally and safely go that fast (there isn't a road within 6 hours that would be good enough to travel that fast on round here) second that you found a lovely car that will do those kinds of speeds.

Good luck with your weird little man.

  6. Sonja, here in Sorrento the vehicle of choice only has two wheels. Only here can you be sitting in an upscale restaurant and have a guy on a Beemer GS slowly make his way through the restaurant (" 'scuzi, 'scuzi ").

  7. Nice looking Audi. I can picture the smile on Roland's face as he was going faster and faster.

  8. I'm not so sure that speed limits or the absence of them are that clearly marked in Germany....

  9. Sadly, when I was in Germany, I was driving a beat up '77 Jeep CJ-7 which could barely get out of its own way, much less drive in the left lane on the autobahn!

Of course, now I ride a rig that can barely get out of its own way....perhaps fate has determined it so.... :)

Good to see you having a bit of fun

  10. Looks like fun! I've never had a car much over 125 MPH (200 kph). The Ford Crown Victorias, that I drove for 22 years couldn't do much more. But on motorcycle, well, all I'll say is, the pucker factor increases exponentially once over 140 MPH (225 kph). I quit glancing at the speedometer at that point.
