An Ode to Currywurst

Roland: Currywurst is to the Germans what Burgers are to North Americans, the Number One Fast Food snack. You can get it almost everywhere and it is sold out of a hole in the wall, a trailer or a food truck: at the football stadium, in the shopping mall, in front of supermarkets... here I am enjoying one in front of a large furniture store.

There is usually nothing special about the sausage; the secret is in the sauce which is a mix of ketchup, Curry powder, pineapple juice and some other - usually secret - ingredients. Most people are hooked after having their first one, so be cautious when you try it! Of course, the taste is even improved when you have some french fries with it (or as we say: Fritten)!

Herbert Grönemeyer (who played Lieutenant Werner in 'Das Boot') once even sang a song in its honor.  The song is written from the point of view of a coal miner who is coming home from working underground and craves for his fast food. It is difficult to translate as it is written in the Ruhr Area slang, but here is some of the lyrics (written by Diether Krebs a.k.a. 'Martin'):

When you go downtown
What gets you filled up?
Currywurst!

Coming home from shift
there is nothing better than
Currywurst!

Add some French Fries
Ah c'mon make it two
Currywurst!

(Note that Currywurst does not have a plural!!!)

  1. Was hooked before I knew it had a name. Is the modified ketchup sold as a condiment in grocery stores?

  2. I've looked over some recipes for this and it will be easy enough to make a version of currywurst. Mostly, you have to like the taste of a curry spice, and I do. So I will give this a try sometime soon. Funny. Would not think of curry being such a popular taste in Germany!

    1. An estimated 800 million servings are sold in Germany each year. I guess you could call that popular... We like our curry.

  3. Well now I'll have to try it.....I've only had a sort of/maybe relationship with curry but I'm game to give it another try. Our 'wurst' family sausage was gritwurst, once upon a time made each year but now that tradition has faded away.
