Meanwhile Upstairs...

Sonja: While I was busy supervising the motorcycle transport, Roland was in the last leg of wrapping up things. We had already packed 25 boxes ourselves, and only left the fragile stuff to be packed by the movers.
A team of four turned up upstairs at the agreed time, boxed the 'leftovers' with utmost care, and wrapped up our furniture in several layers of bubble-wrap.
They had their own system of handwritten paperwork (in our computerized world we honestly somewhat expected scanners and handhelds), but Roland recorded everything electronically. Aren't we German after all?
The whole pack & wrap took longer than anticipated, so we were quite happy that we had already done our share of boxing the day before. Everything is packed up now, and tomorrow our stuff will be picked up and shipped.
We even received an approximate arrival date (although this does not mean too much yet as we will have to store our goods for a while anyway, until we have a final destination in Germany).

  1. Oh, I'm having flashbacks. I wish the best for you two. Moving, leaving, is tough no matter what, but I'm glad you are moving "home" and back with family. too. You might want to take one of those teddy bears with you...

    1. Thanks Martha, I had to think of your move when we were in the midst of packing up. I was tempted to take one teddy bear out as a mascot but we have weight and space limits on our flight back to I resisted.

  2. Bob, it is not the worst thing to feel free of all worldly possessions... at least for a while that is... and then you start missing the coffee machine, the toaster, and all the items that make life so convenient.

  3. The pictures reminded me of the many moves I did in the Army, hated the packing.....and the Army paid folks to do it for me!

Hope it all arrives safe and sound!

    1. If the Army sends you somewhere, the least they can do is take care of the move...

I don't mind the packing, as a matter of fact I rather do it myself.

  4. Wow, it must feel odd to have life boxed up.

But where will you stay until you fly out?

    1. Been there a few times, like Bob said it feels oddly liberating. We still have a sofa couch that we will give away on the last day before we leave, and some basic kitchen necessities, so we can stay in our apartment until we leave.

    1. It is less organization than years of practice ;-) My hubby works in logistics so he is quite familiar with the process anyway...

  6. I would find a big move like this both exciting and stressful at the same time. Something about venturing into the unknown..

    1. Venturing into the unknown, says he who lives in the Arctic. I wish it was the unknown, that would really be exciting... but it is "only" going home... ;-)

  7. Wow, my mind just boggles at the thought of moving all that stuff so far. I had trouble moving four hours away and can't imagine moving to another country. I reckon I'd sell everything.

    So exciting!

    1. We have sold some of our stuff but had a hard time parting with other, so we cramp it all into a 20ft container including the bikes.

  8. So bittersweet Sonja, Roland. I agree with Bob. In the end in some sense our stuff owns us almost as much as we own it.

I hope you have a great trip.

My company has a big presence in Dusseldorf. Who knows, some day I might get there for a visit.

    All the best,

    David

    2. Hi,

Danke.
