Cypress Hills Provincial Park |
We also visited the neighboring prairie province Saskatchewan but there was nothing really to write home about. Then we followed the invitation of our friends in California to spend some time in the sun.
In summer, with Sonja still between jobs, and on her umptiest application, we went on another little vacation, and spent a week on the island (Vancouver Island that is.). Our sojourn got however mildly but somewhat pleasantly interrupted by some telephone interviews that Sonja went through, and by the end of our sojourn she had two job offers lined up.
Late summer Sonja's sister and her son came to visit (and the little guy learned to walk). With Sonja's plenty of free time at hand, she was more than happy to show them the Alberta top tourist attractions.
In October Sonja had decided on a new job in consulting. For her things turned busy again, it was back to all work and little play, but it felt good to have a purposeful life again.
We also got good news from Germany. Our application for dual citizenship had been granted by the German government, meaning we were set to apply for Canadian citizenship, and would be able to remain German citizens.
For Sonja her seven months of unemployment had been tough, as she wasn't used to staying put. 'The lemonade' she made was good: She traveled a lot, picked up canoeing, got back into motorcycling (Guido's fault, that is!), and subsequently commenced with her two-wheeler blog. Unemployment? The heck with it! 2009 hadn't been bad at all.
Life is good!
A person certainly needs a strong person in their corner after 100 apps go nowhere. Glad you are still enjoying happy endings! Lovely photos.
ReplyDeleteIt sucked at times because I was always used to taking care of myself but it was nice to see that people around were supporting when I for once needed it… (friends, family and lovely hubby).
DeleteExactly, Bob. Now would be a good time for that Silverwing. It was a good vehicle and I took it out often to get it some exercise.
ReplyDeleteSonja:
ReplyDeleteI know you're not up to 2010 yet, but I keep thinking about my riding buddy . . .
Riding the Wet Coast
wonderful pictures and yes, sometimes life is a big surprise. First nothing in the line and then two job offers at the same time!
ReplyDeleteAnd you reminded me to write you an email related to the dual citizenship with some questions, we are going to apply for the german bbg at the end of the year.
Enjoy your weekend,
Yvonne
Yvonne, I will be glad to give you some advice on the BBG should you need it.
DeleteThanks for the history lesson Sonja, a glimpse of your lives before our blogger get together in Vancouver.
ReplyDeleteWelcome, David. It's very therapeutic to look at pics and old blog entries from our German blog to get this together, and give Canada a place in this blog as well...
DeleteWell, my philosophy regarding life after job redundancy or taking early retirement to enjoy a motorcycling pastime for a few years before leaving the planet is: If you don't spend it, you don't need to earn it!
ReplyDeleteI believe I've bought so many things in my life that I haven't made maximum use of. In hindsight, I really didn't have to buy them in the first place. Some things sit on shelves or rest in the loft. I have justified buying things that were not strictly necessary by saying to myself at the time, "But I really need that. That would be great if I had that!"
Practising delayed gratification helps but the trouble is, whenever I see something interesting, I seem to completely forget what I reminded myself the last time!
I have made it my mission only to buy things I really need, but I fail to succeed sometimes… I guess I have made best use of the time at hand, so unemployment wasn't lost on me ;-).
DeleteAhhhh the truth comes out. It was all Guido fault, lol.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pictures again. I am enjoying the walk down memory lane.
Yep, there was once a slightly alcohol induced reminiscence and exchange of previous European motorcycle trips between Guido and I, then I was hooked again.
DeleteSeems a great use of your "idle" period SonjaM!
ReplyDeleteDom, I like this kind of "idle" ;-) and could get used to it.
DeleteThis is an enjoyable series and nice photos. Is the colorful, manicured garden the one near Victoria? I remember reading about it in the '70s but have never made it there.
ReplyDeleteRichard, indeed it is on Vancouver Island near Victoria: The Butchart Gardens.
DeleteSonja, thanks for the trip back and lovely photos. Always interested in what makes us who we are, I enjoy your sharing of what was.
